A CHANCE TO HELP

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).

Next Sunday, October 2, we will have an opportunity to obey this command. It has been decided that we will send the contribution to help victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. I spoke last week with Randy Duhon, an elder of the Goodwood Boulevard Church of Christ in Baton Rouge, LA. They have been providing food, shelter and supplies for evacuees. At one time, they were housing and feeding over 100 people. Brother Duhon stated that most, if not all, of the evacuees would have more permanent housing by the end of this week. When this effort reaches completion, they plan to set up a distribution center and eventually send supplies into New Orleans. You can get more information from their website: www.goodwoodchurch.org.

The next phase of their plan is to help congregations and individual Christians rebuild. I was told by brother Duhon that there are at least 8 congregations, probably more, whose buildings have been completely demolished, as well as the homes of their members. The plan is to collect funds so that when they are allowed to return these funds will be available to help them rebuild. This is a great opportunity for us to help fellow Christians devastated by the hurricane and flooding.

“Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need” (Acts 4:34-35). “Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. This they also did, and sent to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul” (Acts 11:29-30). Here we have two prime examples of Christians helping other Christians in time of need. The second example occurred when the brethren in Antioch learned of a famine in Judea. The current situation in the Gulf region is a similar situation. This is a chance for us to follow the great examples of our Christian predecessors.

“I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Let’s all make the commitment to do what we can and give generously next Sunday to help those in great need.
