THE RESULTS OF NO RESTRAINTS
Materialism and secularism rule the minds of millions of men in our modern world. This is disturbing, and even appalling, and yet it is not new. Those among us who are contending that all men should be free “to do their own thing” are not coming up with something new, and the results of this kind of practice are nothing new either—nor different. What will be the results of everybody doing just exactly what they want to do without regard to God’s instructions? Let us look to history for an example of what happened when this sort of action took place. More than 3000 years ago, during the period of the Judges, Israel came to the very lowest depths of its history. The Bible explains why: “…every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25). When men and women refuse to accept a standard above their own, insisting upon making their own rules of life, going their own way, disaster is bound to follow.
The Israelites sank to such a depth of wickedness that God withdrew from them. For a period of about 400 years, God just let them alone, because they were determined to do whatever they wanted to do, and they very nearly ceased to be a nation. They were oppressed and overcome by the nations around them. Will this happen to us? Who can say! God has not promised to always protect America and keep it strong, regardless of how wicked its people become. God tells us that “Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Prov.14:34).
What is wrong with everybody doing what seems right in their own eyes? Just one thing. The things that are right in the sight of God are seldom considered right by those who want to live independent from all constraint. Solomon tells us, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Prov.14:12). What he is saying is that whenever man decides to follow his own yearnings, he forgets God and follows the ways of sin. Following the ways of the world is popular, but that road leads to disgrace and eternal destruction.
Follow Christ! Let the world know that you are a Christian. If advertising pays in worldly affairs, it will pay in the life of the Christian. “Let your light so shine…” (Matt.5:16).
